Valentine’s Day is made for lovers, and that leaves so many people out because they have no love in their life to celebrate. If your heart is cold this Valentine’s Day because love hasn’t found you or you’ve recently experienced a setback, don’t worry. There’s hope for you.

Here are my five tips for how to mend your broken heart this Valentine’s Day:

1. Love yourself. This Valentine’s Day, don’t mope in the sorrow of being single. Do you know how many people are stuck in dead end relationships that wished that they were single? They wish they could do whatever they want, and you can. Embrace your freedom and love yourself. Don’t be scared to spoil yourself while others are spoiling their partner. You deserve it. Perhaps you could take yourself out shopping or treat yourself to some chocolate strawberries and have a laid back Netflix night. Whatever you do, take the time to treat yourself to something special — because that’s what you are.

2. Love someone else. You don’t have to be in a relationship to show someone else love, affection and care on Valentine’s Day. Take your mom out to dinner, send flowers to your sister, bring donuts into your coworkers or spend some quality time with your best friend. Everyone deserves love of various kinds, and by showing love to others you’re sure to receive it back. This alone can surely mend a broken heart.

3. Don’t call you ex. As tempting as it is to reconnect with your ex on Valentine’s Day, don’t do it. There’s a very good chance that if you do reach out to your ex, you’ll only get even more rejection and feel even more horrible. If your ex really loves you, he or she will make it a point to reconnect with you on Valentine’s Day — but even then I would still be cautious. There’s a reason he or she is your ex.

4. Socialize. This is as simple as it is sounds. Just get out and go have some fun. Don’t sit around the house on Valentine’s Day clinging onto the past. Go shopping, go hang out with a friend, spend time with family and loved ones or go out and try to make some new friends. The important thing is to be around other people who can help distract you from your heartache.

5. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning. According to experts, including one psychologist at Columbia University, aspirin and other painkillers can help mend a broken heart. Studies have shown that there is a link between psychological pain and physical pain, so some experts think heartbreak should be treated much like a headache or back pain. For even more help putting aside the pain, let me look into your future and see the promising relationships that are yet to come.

Valentine’s Day is a day of love, and you can experience it in your own special way. No one should be able to separate you from your happiness, and there’s no reason you have to feel bad about being alone on Valentine’s Day. It’s your life, and you can experience it any way you like.
